DIGITAL IMAGE STORAGE WHILE TRAVELING
If you don't take your laptop with you, there are other devices that will allow you to download the images from your camera flash memory card so you can use the digital card over and over, and not worry about running out of space. Or an even more practical approach is to buy a high capacity flash card. Depending on your shooting style, a 4 GB or 8 GB, or even larger capacity card may provide enough space for an entire trip.

MEMORY CARDS
Take several memory cards -- the larger the better -- I have several 2 GB cards along with 4 GB and 8 GB cards.

EXTRA BATTERIES
This is a must.  Depending on your camera, at least one extra battery is necessary. One of my cameras eats batteries like they were candy. So I usually carry at least 3 extra batteries for it, and charge them all in the evening.

FILTERS
In the old days of film cameras, you always needed a stack of filters to correct or add to lighting conditions. Now these are built into the digital electronics of the cameras. Many digital cameras have an automatic AWB setting that corrects for most light conditions with just the one setting.

TRIPODS
A camera support such as a tripod can make it possible to get photos of scenes that would otherwise be impossible to photograph. However, tripods are bulky and awkward to use, and I usually do not take them. I try to find alternate devices such as something to prop up the camera, or use a very small pocket tripod. Useful prop-up items are such things as a shoe, hat, sweater, etc.
